NEW YORK REAL ESTATE LICENSE RENEWAL REQUIREMENTS
Renewal Cycle: 2 Years
Renewal Deadline: Anniversary of initial licensure
Required 1st Renewal: For the Initial two-year licensing term for real estate salespersons, 2 hours of agency related instruction must be completed within the two-year period immediately preceding a renewal. Any salesperson who successfully completes an approved broker qualifying course (which requires passing the final exam), within their current term, will receive continuing education credit for completion of that course. Please note: If completing the broker course for continuing education, you must also complete 2.5 hours of ethical business practices and 1 hour of recent legal matters topics to satisfy the requirement.
Required Subsequent Renewals: 2.5 hours of Ethical Business Practices, 1 hour of recent Legal Matters, 3 hours of Fair Housing or Discrimination in the Sale or Rental of Real Property or Interest in Real Property AND 1 hour of Agency, every two years. A recent legislative amendment REMOVED the 15-year real estate broker continuing education exemption and now requires all brokers who were previously exempted to complete continuing education starting July 1, 2021.

How Much Does It Cost to Renew my New York Real Estate License?
Salesperson – $55
Broker – $155
Who Submits my Completed New York Continuing Education?
The New York Real Estate Commission does not require students or education providers to submit course completions.
What happens if I do not renew my New York real estate license?
You cannot conduct any real estate activities that require a license. You have two years to renew your license. If you do not renew within two years you will have to retake the state exam, however, you will not have to retake the 75-hour pre-licensing course.
When submitting your new salesperson application you must include your new exam results, your application fee, and a copy of your expired license.
I could not complete my New York real estate continuing education, but I wish to renew my license anyway. Can I apply for an extension?
New York offers an extension in cases of hardship. To apply for an extension you must submit the following, preferably prior to your license expiration:
- A written request for the extension,
- completed renewal form & fee
- Original documentation demonstrating your hardship; i.e., medical documentation.
I have extra New York real estate continuing education credits, can I apply them to the next cycle?
No, New York only accepts continuing education from the current cycle.
Are there any exemptions from New York real estate continuing education?

Does New York Have Reciprocity with Any Other State?
Yes.
- Arkansas – Broker only—two years’ licensure and current. (Business and Residence must be in Arkansas.)
- Colorado – Broker and Associate Broker. Current licensure. (Business and residence addresses must be in Colorado). Colorado Associate Brokers must submit a salesperson application and $50 fee, along with their certification and irrevocable consent form.
- Connecticut – Broker and Sales – current licensure only. (Business and Residence must be in Connecticut
- Georgia – Broker and Sales – current licensure only (business and residence must be in Georgia). Must have obtained their license by passing Georgia exam.
- Massachusetts – Massachusetts Broker only—two years’ licensure and current. (Business and Residence must be in Massachusetts.)
- Mississippi – Broker only—two years’ licensure and current. (Business and Residence must be in Mississippi.)
- Oklahoma – Broker and Sales—two years’ licensure and current. (Business and Residence must be in Oklahoma.)
- Pennsylvania – Pennsylvania Broker and Salesperson —current licensure only. (Business and Residence must be in Pennsylvania)
- West Virginia – West Virginia Broker and Sales—current licensure only. (Business and Residence must be in West Virginia.)

How do I obtain my New York real estate salesperson or broker license?
Salesperson:
- Complete a 75-hour salesperson qualifying education course

- Schedule and complete the real estate salesperson exam
- Complete an application for licensure
